Linktree sucks for many reasons. Here are my top seven causes.
- Lack of Branding:Â You can only match your branding if you pay a fee. Even when you pay, the style tools are very basic.
- Data Ownership: Using Linktree means sharing your user data with a third party, which may not align with your data privacy policies.
- Dependence on Third-Party Service: Relying on Linktree means you’re subject to their terms of service, availability, and potential changes in their platform. What if the service is down or gets hacked?
- Inconsistent UX: The user experience may not be as seamless as a custom-built landing page on your website designed specifically for your audience’s needs.
- Perceived Professionalism: Using a third-party tool like Linktree might appear less professional than having a well-designed landing page on your domain website.
- Future-Proofing: Building your own infrastructure ensures you’re better prepared for future needs and can adapt flexibly.
- SEO and Traffic Loss:Â (This is arguably the worst reason.) You’re sending links to the linktr.ee domain instead of your website. This is one extra step for potential clients to make, which could cost you a sale or a client.
Here’s my old free Linktree page. Yuck.
How To Build Your Linktree Alternative
I use WordPress for my website, but building an alternative should be super easy with a bit of CSS on any website platform.
Here’s the outline.
- No logo, header or footer – distractions for your visitors.
- Full screen with a bit of padding all around.
- Your headshot, name, and title are at the top. I also include an H1 title called “Popular Links” for SEO.
- Horizontally stacked buttons for your links. I’ve added icons to my buttons and used a different colour to highlight important buttons to click.
- Easy URL to remember. Mine is “/popularlinks“.
My Popular Links Page

The mobile version looks like this.
Very nice!
Here’s the page in the WordPress editor. I use the GeneratePress theme and GenerateBlocks plugin.
It’s a very simple structure and is easy for anyone to create.
Why don’t you try it on your own website? When you’re done, send me the link!
Until next time, keep thriving!
